Insurance Adjusters Help Harvey Drones Evaluate Damage

Insurance adjusters have been bringing more drones into Texas to assess the damage in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. This new technology has been used more extensively in damage assessment, but it is still limited in its practical use for relief efforts. Tethered drones hover near hankamer (Texas) looking for damage. Drones are not the only tool that the red cross has to help affected communities.

At&t

AT&T has been testing drones for connectivity and cellular coverage in disaster zones as part of its ongoing effort to assist the Texans affected from Hurricane Harvey. These drones are more accurate and safer than a maintenance team on the ground. These drones can also report back with photos or HD video, giving first responders an aerial view of a cell site. But what exactly are AT&T drones capable of?

PrecisionHawk

PrecisionHawk's Hurricane Harvey drone pilots used DJI Matrice100 multicopter drones with Zenmuse Z30 aerial zoom cameras. These cameras can capture amazing photos and videos with a 30x optical zoom. PrecisionHawk pilots prepared drones and crews ahead of the disaster. They brought multiple batteries and assembled at a utility operations centre. These pilots had been through extensive training and were highly skilled in emergency management, planning missions, and safety procedures.

NCDOT

NCDOT sent 15 drone teams into areas where Hurricane Harvey was likely to impact. NCDOT drones were trained to conduct all flight operations within the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA), Part 107, and COA. These drones were utilized to survey the transportation infrastructure of roads, bridges, and airports.

Allstate

A drone-based insurance program is already underway. Allstate plans to use drones for assessment of flood damages in Texas, New Mexico Oklahoma, Colorado and Colorado. The company has already used drone technology to quickly reimburse customers' debit cards in the event that they have to file a claim. USAA also uses drones to assess storm-related claims, and used them for the first time after Hurricane Sandy. Allstate recently used drones to assess storm-related claims in New Braunfels (Texas) and other areas.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department

MDFR used DJI Mavic Enterprise Dual drones (thermal imaging, spotlight payloads) during the initial search. They used the drones to provide general situation awareness throughout the night. Drones with thermal cameras and spotlights were used to provide high-resolution images of the scene before the tower collapsed. Aerial photos and data were stitched together to create a 3D model of the area.

FAQ

What is the law on drones flying over private property?

Recently, the FAA issued new rules regarding commercial drone flight. These rules are only applicable to UAVs that weigh less than 55 pounds and fly below 400 feet above ground. Commercial operators will need to register with FAA and get a license from agency. Local authorities must also approve them if they are operating near airports or in other restricted areas.

Is it possible to fly a drone at high altitudes without a license?

The FAA has no limits on the maximum height a drone can fly. The FAA does require you to register unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), which include the registration number of your model, weight and size, serial numbers, manufacturer's names, date manufactured and other information.

How can I keep drones away?

Drones are becoming more common for home surveillance. However they can also be a threat to privacy or security. If you want to avoid drone attacks, you should install motion sensors around your property and use them to detect any unauthorized flying objects.

What kind batteries does a drone need?

Drones are powered by lithium-ion battery. A typical drone uses between 3 and 6 volts.

How To

How to Repair a Damaged Motor on a Drone

It is important to first identify which motor part is damaged before you can repair it. To do this, remove the propeller and motor shaft. Next, remove all wires from the motor shaft and inspect the internal workings. If you spot something wrong, you can identify which part of the motor needs to be fixed.

If there is no damage to the motor, then you don't have to worry too much however if the motor looks like one of these images below, then you'll need to replace some components before you can fly again.

Imagine a motor that isn't turning anymore because it has been bent. You will need to bend it back into shape. To hold the engine, use a pair pliers or a vice grip. After you have completed this step, be sure to inspect the motor for any signs of wear.

Once you're satisfied that everything's ok, put the propeller back onto the motor shaft and reattach the wires. Your drone is now ready for flight!
