How To

How to Fly Drones at a Beginning Level

A drone is a remotely-controlled aircraft that is used for aerial photography and surveillance. The technology behind drones has been around since World War II. DJI's Phantom quadcopters became commercially available in 2010. There have been many types of drones since then, including beginner-friendly drones like the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 and professional-grade multi-rotor crafts like the DJI Mavic Pro.

There are many ways to fly a drone.

  1. Remote control - This method uses a control device attached to your hand, which enables you to steer the drone through its flight path. There are two main types: Joysticks (like a radio), and On/Off switches (like an alarm clock).
  2. Manual Control- This allows you to control your drone remotely via GPS coordinates. You must keep track of the location where you want the drone to go and follow the instructions from the app.
  3. Autonomous Flight: This means that the drone will take care of all the piloting. It allows the drone to fly independently without any human intervention. For the autonomous flight to occur, the drone must have a built-in camera and sensors capable of capturing images and data.
  4. Triggered Flight: This is similar in concept to manual control. The pilot manually creates a route and the drone then follows it until it reaches that endpoint. After the program is complete, the drone automatically returns to the ground.
  5. Landing Gear - Some drones come equipped with landing gear that allows them to land safely if they lose power or run out of battery during flight.
  6. Goggles - Pilots may wear goggles to shield themselves from flying debris.
  7. Camera - Certain drones come with cameras that allow you to take photos and videos from high above.
  8. Obstacles – Some drones have obstacle avoidance systems that stop them from colliding with obstacles.
  9. Speed - Some drones can reach speeds of over 40 mph.
  10. Battery Life - Most drones can last between 20 minutes to 3 hours, depending on how much power you're using.
  11. Range - Some drones can travel upto 30 miles depending on their models.
  12. Power source - Some drones require an external power source; others work off internal batteries.
  13. Weight - Some drones can be as light as 1 pound while others can reach 4 pounds.
  14. Size - Drones come in many sizes, from small gadgets that fit in one's hands to large craft that weigh more than 50 lbs.
  15. Price - All drones fall within a specific price range, from high-end models that can cost thousands of dollars to lower-cost options starting at $100.
